Turkish soldiers etc. etc. I was told 1000 soldiers inside & 7 or 8000 Pilgrims & 100 Foreigners English etc. we got place on 3rd floor of rotunda -- Stood there from 11 a.m. till 2 P.M. Some Pilgrims tied themselves to Pillars shouting and holding candles. Two rows of soldiers all around. Quite a number of Pilgrims made a rush broke the lines and got to the Sepulchre where stood pushing, shouting etc. one fellow turned somersault on the heads of the crowd. Others rushing in were struck by soldiers on head etc. with stocks of guns. Shouting, dancing, pushing, striking etc. etc. the order of the day. at last Procession of Monks in long robes went round the Sepulchre. One flag seemed distasteful to some and quite a wish to pull it down; but at last let alone -- Now all frantic eyes staring & flashing till fire handed out of the holes, then a rush to take away in an instant lights burning all around on floor. 2nd storey 3 & away up on top I saw. Just then a door away up that was shut opened & rays of sun quite visible. I think done for effect. We came away after that ----
