In Ta-ma-ien (打馬煙) stands “ Margaret Machar Memorial Church. 1884.”

1885.05.31 Sunday

Ther.80’. started in the morning and on and on we came resting every now and then. Passed where we saw many PiN-po-hoan(平埔番) all delighted. In eve. came to Ta-ma-ien(打馬煙). Got a great Welcome. Had worship in the eve. Chapel crowd. How cheering to hear the singing. Tau-sia (頭社) 8 iong & one head man.

June, 1885

1885.06.01 Monday

Ther.85’. This morning left at 8 A.M. and came to Toa-tek-ui(大竹圍). Chapel clean, Ki-li-tan(奇立丹) also clean, then to Ki-bi-lan(奇武荖). Had dinner. On we came to Buloan(武暖) also clean, passed Sin-a-han(辛仔罕). Entered SaN-kiat-a-koe(三結仔街). KoaiN sent 3 chhe to Tang-mng-thau(董門頭). all wonderful, Mandarins and all underlings so careful— at 7 P.M. wrote outside… In eve. whole assembly met in the Ch. I addressed them. On their present duty regarding the French. Be loyal to their country.

1885.06.02 Tuesday

Ther. 95’. Started early and went to Sau-hut(掃笏). all turned out. Ta-la-bi(打那美) pulled much of old building down so as to repair. Pi-thau (埤頭)entered soon after. Met all the Converts. Then went to Chin-tsu-li-kan(珍珠里簡), had dinner. Proceeded after sitting under the bamboo tree to Ki-bu-lan(奇武荖), Went on around the hills to So-o(蘇澳). Then took boat to Lam-hong-o(南方澳). remained all night. sat outside singing for hours, then slept on benches. not much sleep.

1885.06.03 Wednesday

Ther. 84’. Lam-hong-o(南方澳) started at 7 A.M. I walked a long way. came to Ki-lek-kan(奇立簡). halted awhile extracted teeth etc. came to Pho-lo-sin-a-oan(波羅辛仔宛). Sunburnt bricks, grass roof. Very large and dry. Came out to Ki-li-pan(奇立板). Had dinner sitting outside after which we came to Hoan-sia-thau(番社頭), all met us and at 5 P.M. arrived at Ta-ma-ien(打馬煙). Cloudy like rain. Throughout this entire trip I carried the British flag and found it of immense value—

1885.06.04 Thursday

Ther.84’. In morning hopes of a fine day but passing through Thau-sia(頭社) down came the rain in torrents. On and on we went under clouds, rain and storm. Thunders rolled-- 6 P.M. entered Teng-siang-khoe(頂雙溪), put up in an Inn, wet dirty. drenched wet. Retired early. Pig sty a much better place.--
